Be Sure to Keep Bird Baths and Feeders Clean!

Be Sure to Keep Bird Baths and Feeders Clean! If you are putting out bird baths and feeders this summer, you must keep them clean. This summer has been especially tough for birds. Rapid mortality rates have been reported, especially in the Eastern United States among songbirds. Causes of these infections are being investigated, but still unknown.

Be sure to disinfect birds baths and feeders once a week with a 10% bleach solution. Additionally, be watchful of the birds that visit your yard to make sure any sign of infection is noticed as soon as possible. Notify your state’s wildlife division if you see a bird with noticeable issues. Issues include crusty, swollen or sunken eyes or birds behaving oddly. We can do our part to help prevent the spread of these deadly infections, and keep our backyard birds safe for the remainder of the season!

For additional information, Audubon is keeping up to date on the Songbird Epidemic.
